Enjoyable, but far from a wonderful read

This was an enjoyable read, but fell victim to the same aspects of poor writing that are also present (to a lesser extent) in Maas' series A Court of Thorns and Roses.1. Unbelievable characters. I agree with other characters here that Celaena Sardothien is completely unbelievable as a ruthless assassin. Her motivations seem very clouded - she wants nothing more than to be free, so this king's champion competition offers her her chance. Simultaneously, she hates the king and his imperial ambition. Yet she turns down a perfect opportunity to escape from this dangerous situation. What? Her romantic counterparts in the story are also poorly fleshed out.2. Terrible dialogue. Rather than sounding like courtiers and heroes of a fantasy world, the characters often speak like teenagers flirting at the mall.The story is compelling and well-paced, so I probably will read the next one, but it's far from book of the year!

A Court Of' series is better.

I don’t understand the hype for this book. I read ‘A Court Of’ books previously and really enjoyed them. This series however, was so disappointing. Didn’t like the writing style. Personally, I find it hard to connect with the characters when it’s not in first person. Didn’t like the love triangle at all, neither of them were very appealing. Last but not least, the main character is very annoying. She is supposed to be the best assassin in the land yet we so no evidence of this. She is childish and over the top.All in all, I feel this series is written for a younger audience than the authors other series. Maybe one day I’ll be bored enough to read the rest but I have no plans to right now.

Easy read with lack of depth

I am giving this book 2.5 stars (and 3 stars on websites that do not accept half stars), because 70% into the book, things began to get interesting (the premise was good too, but that’s it). Also, overall it’s an easy & fairly entertaining read – consider this confession as the confession of a guilty pleasure. I can see why people like it, and I can see the book’s commercial appeal. Unfortunately, all of this was not enough to make me a fan or make me want to continue the series (I rarely want to continue series that are longer than a trilogy in any case).Am I disappointed? Yes, but mostly because I have heard so much about the book, and I was expecting something amazing. In case you’re wondering, yes, I think there are books out there that live up to the hype.
